en veelgestelde vraag aan mij is: Waaraan moet een goede domeinnaam voldoen? Daarom heb ik besloten die vraag hier maar eens voorgoed uit de weg te ruimen.
Zoekmachine of bezoeker?
Ten eerste moet je je realiseren dat een domeinnaam belangrijk is voor twee partijen: de bezoekers en de zoekmachines. Beide partijen hebben verschillende belangen en het hangt van jouw situatie af wiens belangen jij zwaarder moet laten wegen. Zo is het voor bezoekers belangrijk dat zij de domeinnaam gemakkelijk kunnen onthouden. Voor zoekmachines geldt dit natuurlijk niet, maar voor hen is het weer heel belangrijk dat de domeinnaam veel relevante zoekwoorden bevat. Met zoekwoorden bedoel ik woorden waarop jij gevonden wilt worden in de zoekmachine. Ook groeit de waardering van de zoekmachine als de domeinnaam al een tijdje bestaat. Denk hierbij aan een periode van 3 of 4 jaar.
Wiens belangen moet ik zwaarder laten wegen?
Deze vraag is moeilijk te beantwoorden, omdat het van website tot website verschilt. Grof gezegd kun je zeggen dat als je gaat voor een website die zijn bezoekers trekt via bijvoorbeeld Google, je de belangen van de zoekmachines zwaarder moet laten wegen. Als je aan de andere kant gaat voor een website die zijn bezoekers ook via andere wegen trekt en vooral gaat voor gebruiksvriendelijkheid en terugkerende bezoekers, zijn de belangen van bezoekers weer belangrijker.
Maar nogmaals: deze afweging moet je zelf maken en vaak blijft het een moeilijke beslissing. Natuurlijk is er de optie om meerdere domeinnamen te gebruiken, maar in de praktijk is dat vaak onhandig.
